Sustainability
We are happy to working with Eden Reforestation Projects again in 2025.
MITIGATION AND REFORESTATION
As we work throughout the year to mitigate our homes and forests from the threat of wildfire, it has become impossible for us not to notice the changes in our climate that have led to significantly more destructive fire behavior during wildfire events.
Regardless of the causes of climate change, many of our residents are concerned about the wider impact of removing living trees to make our community safer. While we are restoring forest health and creating a more fire resistant environment around the homes in our district, we would like to offer homeowners the opportunity to participate in a replanting and reforestation program. We have entered into a partnership which allows homeowners the opportunity to offset and replant the trees we are removing from their land in a different location in the world. For 2025 these projects focus in Kenya and Mozambique.
Eden Reforestation Projects is a nonprofit NGO that works in developing countries to rebuild natural landscapes destroyed by deforestation. Eden works directly with villages and communities suffering from extreme poverty resulting from the deforestation and destruction of the land that sustains them. The organization employs thousands of local villagers and provides them with the education and tools necessary to plant, grow, and protect to maturity, millions of trees each year. Eden currently plants approximately 15 million additional trees a month, and in 2020 reached over 423 million trees planted of which over 225 million are mangrove trees.
Sales:
The cost of replanting trees through the Eden Reforestation Projects on average is 75 cents per tree. So $7.50 will offset the impact of removing a mature tree in our district, based on consultation with local experts, our general estimate is that 10 seedlings will reasonably quickly offset the environmental cost of removing a fully grown mature pine or fir tree at this altitude.
These replanting efforts are entirely voluntary and we are simply offering it as an sustainabilty option in our contract for homeowners who want to offset the impact of our work on their land
Funding:
The general tree planting price is $0.75 per tree, this cost covers all expenses, including nursery costs, transportation of seedlings to the reforestation sites, planting, guarding, and weeding to allow a head start on vegetation.
Our goal is to have 3 sources of funding:
Homeowners: During the initial assessment of your property, you will be offered the opportunity to replant trees, and that cost will simply be a line item on your estimate.
Annual Donation: $2500. Thanks to a private donor, we have received funding to plant in excess of 3000 trees through the Eden Reforestation project. Our hope is that this will offset the carbon costs of running the crew and its equipment annually.
Grant funding: Going forward, our hope is to grow this sustainability initiative by seeking further funding to allow us to pursue our local forest health efforts in a global context.
